BFI Recycling and Transfer Station - Los Angeles
Los Angeles, California

The concrete floor of any waste transfer station takes a major amount of abuse on a daily basis. From repetitive traffic patterns, front-end loader buckets, gouging from glass and other jagged materials to the effects of aggressive liquids and chemicals, these facilities require the most rugged and durable tipping floor application available.

When the 7,000-square-foot concrete floor at the BFI Recycling and Transfer Station in central Los Angles began to deteriorate to the point of performance failure, the owners knew something had to be done. BFI had experienced significant profit loss from long shut-downs with previous repairs as well as issues with the strength and durability of the repaired structure. After analyzing the condition of the floor, BFI came to the conclusion that their organization would benefit from installing a product tough enough to endure the heavy equipment and harsh environment of a transfer station moving more than 3,000 tons of waste per day.

Because of their excellent reputation, Delta Pacific - Structural Preservation Systems (SPS) was contacted by BFI to assess their facility and provide a long-tem, cost-effective solution. A major concern for the owner was the desire to avoid costly downtime, so BFI and DPB factored shut-down costs into the overall flooring repair costs. After analyzing shutdown costs, the volume of material the facility processed in a 24-hour period, as well as other factors leading to deterioration (impact, abrasion, chemicals), BFI and Delta Pacific - SPS realized that a one-time installation of an iron topping would significantly strengthen the concrete floor. In addition, the short cure time and no installation downtime would increase overall profitability.

The process began with the removal of the badly damaged flooring. Next, the entire transfer station floor was replaced with two layers of iron topping. The new floor has superior abrasion and impact resistant qualities and will last up to eight times longer than concrete. BFI was so pleased with Delta Pacific - SPS' performance that they were contracted for nine additional projects totaling 63,500 square feet.
