Serving Huntington Beach and several surrounding cities, the 25,500-square-foot Rainbow Disposal Transfer and Recycling Facility processes over 2,000 tons of municipal solid waste per day. Since 1984, Rainbow Disposal has utilized Structural Preservation Systems' (SPS) Delta Pacific Division for its tipping floor repairs.
In 2005, SPS placed a narrow test panel of a new material called DeltaTopTM. DeltaTop is a specialty blend of iron and natural aggregates with Portland Cement. It has a final compressive strength of approximately 20,000 psi and very low permeability. Over a three year period, the concrete surrounding the test panel wore away, but the DeltaTop test panel remained intact - this created a "speed bump." Equipment operators for the facility actually dubbed the test panel the "speed bump" as they drove their loaders and other equipment over it.
At about the same time, another area of the floor that had not been repaired by SPS before was showing noticeable wear as a result of repetitive traffic patterns of the equipment pushing solid waste toward the facility's single load-out port. Rainbow Disposal contacted SPS to repair this section of the facility's floor and had requested a floor repair material that was high in abrasion, chemical and leacheate-resistant. SPS needed only to look at the "speed bump" to recommend DeltaTop as the repair material because the material had held up so well. It was obvious (from the "speed bump") to SPS and Rainbow Disposal that this material would far outlast regular or other high-strength concrete.
Following SPS' recommendation, Rainbow Disposal agreed to place 6,000 square feet of DeltaTop to the high wear area. The project was completed over one weekend in September 2008, and Rainbow Disposal is extremely pleased with its newly repaired floor.
